The Darvaza gas crater – or “Gateway to Hell” – is a crater originating from the collapse of a natural gas cavern located in Darvaza, Turkmenistan. Geologists intentionally set it on fire to prevent the spread of methane gas, and it is assumed that it has been burning continuously since 1971. This constant feature has led locals to identify Darvaza as a possible entrance to the underworld.
