Portraits

Portraits is a project that challenges the traditional notion of portraiture as a mimetic representation of a subject’s likeness. Here, photography is not treated as a mere tool of reproduction, but as an expansive medium capable of transcending both the limits of mimesis and the medium’s predisposition for mass production.

Each participant was invited to collect strands of hair lost during everyday gestures—such as showering or brushing—over the course of several weeks. In parallel, they were asked to choose an object that felt personally representative of their identity, without being required to explain or justify their selection. This approach was intended to preserve the freedom and autonomy of the choice.

The selected objects were photographed and printed on canvas using UV printing. Once the hair collections were received, they were carefully sewn onto the corresponding canvases, creating hybrid portraits that merge physical trace, personal symbolism, and photographic representation through a relational artistic approach.
