[Shun Kumagai]

Shun utilizes casting techniques by filling his handcrafted plaster molds with glass, then melting and cooling them in a high-temperature kiln to create one-of-a-kind works.

Since the plaster mold breaks when the piece is removed, each artwork is unique and cannot be replicated.

His choice of materials is also distinctive. In addition to purchased glass, he incorporates waste glass received from other artists and Aki, creating rich and varied colors and patterns.

This approach diverges from the traditional glassmaking philosophy of eliminating impurities; instead, he actively embraces them to explore new forms of beauty.

While there is always a risk of cracking, Shun repairs broken pieces using the Kintsugi technique and presents them as part of his artistic vision.

His bold and experimental approach is influenced by other materials, such as ceramics and metalwork. For example, he recreates the dripping effect of ceramic glazes in glass, establishing a unique artistic perspective.

[Aki Sakaida]

Aki primarily works with blown glass, a technique where molten glass is gathered onto a blowpipe and shaped by inflating it with breath.

Since she does not use molds, each of her works is also one-of-a-kind.

She adds color by sprinkling powdered pigments onto nearly transparent glass, allowing the density and depth of color to change depending on how the powder is applied.

Her representative piece, “Kuyuri (くゆり)”, is created by burning wax onto the surface of the glass, giving it a distinctive smoky texture.

The “Hanakage (はなかげ)” series is known for its flower-like shadows that emerge when light shines through. Originally introduced in olive green, the series has expanded in recent years to include red, adding further depth to its artistic evolution.

[Closing Thoughts]

Both artists push the boundaries of glass as a material, pursuing their own unique expressions of beauty.

At the core of their creative process lies a dialogue with materials, a deep exploration of techniques, and an introspective engagement with their artistic vision.

Experience the captivating interplay of light and shadow, heat and cooling, chance and intention in their crystalline creations.

We look forward to welcoming you.
