We are pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Moyuru Ando, a woodworking artist based in Ueda, Shinshu, starting today.
Using local wood as her material, Ando carves each piece without relying on sketches or preliminary drawings, instead discovering the natural form that best suits each piece of wood. Her works beautifully retain the individuality of the wood, including its warping, knots, and cracks.
Typically, wood becomes harder and easier to work with after drying, but Ando’s approach is a little different.
She uses freshly cut, moisture-rich green wood, carving smooth curves and delicate thin edges.
The natural shrinkage and deformation that occur during the drying process bring out unique and captivating expressions in each piece.
In this first solo exhibition at yau, a variety of works will be on display, including not only tableware that is easy to use in daily life, but also lamp shades that highlight the wood’s beautiful grain and lacquered pieces finished with wipe-lacquering.
Each piece is one of a kind.
Please enjoy the works where the natural beauty of wood has been brought out through Ando’s craftsmanship.
