Exhibition Notice: Masahiko Yamamoto – Contemporary Animism
The exhibition “Masahiko Yamamoto: Contemporary Animism” will be held from March 8 (Saturday) to March 15 (Saturday).
Animism is a deep belief, rooted in ancient thought, that spiritual beings or life forces reside in objects and the natural world. This belief often appears through visual expressions, such as patterns, and particularly in indigenous cultures, it symbolizes a sacred connection with nature and spirits, often used to invoke spiritual power or ward off evil spirits. In Native American views of nature, all things in the natural world are considered sacred, and harmony with nature is seen as the essence of life. The philosophy of symbiosis, respecting the delicate relationship, cycles, and balance with spirits, and considering the prosperity of the whole community, continues to provide significant insights in the modern world.
Masahiko Yamamoto, based in Soni Village, Nara Prefecture, creates works that beautifully fuse ancient wisdom with modern techniques, resonating powerfully with the souls of contemporary people as new messages. The moment I encountered his work, I felt an animalistic physicality, and at the same time, I was astonished by the deep meaning woven between animism and the functionality of tools. I was reminded that tools have long carried emotions tied to nature worship, faith, and awe. Yamamoto’s work reinterprets ethnic culture, cultivated over many years, with modern methods, and attempts to deliver it to our hearts in new forms. In doing so, he awakens the animistic sensations that tools once held, evoking impulses that cannot be expressed in words within us.
