Description

I will be holding a solo exhibition at Sara Japanese Pottery (@sara_japanese_pottery) in New York from May 15th to 17th. The title is “Ceramic Innovation” — Innovation in Ceramics.

When I was 18 years old, I aspired to become a potter.

Without knowing anything, I groped my way forward, sometimes drawing close to what my predecessors left behind, sometimes being repelled, tasting despair, and finding light from it, as I created my own works.

Since then, thirty years have passed.

I never imagined that I would hold a solo exhibition in distant New York and be labeled as an innovator in ceramics.

To be honest, I don’t see myself as an innovator.

Rather, these days, I feel that I am living a grounded, down-to-earth life.

That said, I do believe that I am creating every day while facing something within myself.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I held solo exhibitions in New York every year for five years.

During that time, the world changed drastically.

How have I and my works changed during the approximately five years from the beginning to the end of the pandemic?

The place where I now stand is at the end of a path that my predecessors built over 10,000 years.

I believe I am simply treading the path a little further so that the next generation can continue to walk it.

It has truly been a long time since I held a solo exhibition in New York.
