Controlled Chaos
Sumi ink on fabric, nylon mesh

Vanessa Vun, 2025

Controlled Chaos explores the tension between poise and rupture through a process of sumi ink drawing and fabric manipulation. By merging gestural abstraction with precise figurative mark making, the work reveals a state of fragile containment an internal turbulence held beneath the surface.

Drawing from the literary trope of the black swan, the work frames the figure as a representation of the shadow self: one’s truest and rawest form, the aspect of identity that is suppressed, disciplined, or concealed in order to meet external expectations. This symbolic black swan becomes a metaphor for the subconscious longings, fears, and emotional burdens that remain unspoken.

Presented within the terrain of modern society, the work foregrounds the quiet and often invisible labour women undertake in the contemporary world the emotional weight carried privately while maintaining outward composure. Controlled Chaos holds space for this duality. It acknowledges the tension between the desire to be seen and the learned instinct to self-contain.

The frayed edges, ink bleeding into fabric, and entangled nylon threads evoke an interior unravelling that remains structurally intact, mirroring the fine line between control and collapse, suppression and expression.
